About the Author

My Name is Lisa Harrison and I'm one of the Improve Home Health founders.  I'm a wife, a mother of three young children and also a parent concerned about how chemicals affect our children, our health and the environment. 

As a child I had horrible eczema, allergies and mild asthma so I learned to be cautious about skin products.  However, my real concern about toxins started after a chemical scare in my own home.  My cleaning lady was using full strength chlorine bleach, Lime Away, Comet, Windex and a toilet bowl cleaner all in one small bathroom and it had created dangerous fumes.  I immediately sent the kids outside, opened windows, and had one of those life-changing moments:  I knew the chemicals being used in my home were unhealthy and I had to do something about it. 

In a former career I researched consumer trends and consulted to major clients.  I decided to apply my research experience and dove into books, journal articles and information from major non-profit and medical organizations about environmental health and chemical exposures.  What I learned was shocking.  Aside from poisonings from household products, there is a strong connection between common chemical ingredients found in our homes and modern disease.  Despite overwhelming research, the public is barely aware of this issue.  I think of myself as an informed person but if I hadn't actively looked for this information, I probably wouldn't know it today.  The reason is simple: media exposure of the dangers of common household products would offend advertisers.

This lack of public awareness bothered me tremendously so my husband challenged me to make an impact by sharing what I learned in our community.  A friend invited me to speak at a mother's group.  The educational presentation was so well received that it led to other speaking events.  Many people also wanted to know what products I chose for my own home so it was natural for me to tell them.  My research led me to a health-oriented  manufacturer that doesn't advertise yet offers healthier, safer brands.  The ImproveHomeHealth website  has partnered with this manufacturer to  help consumers learn about higher quality, safer brands  that are reasonably priced.
